Madurai: A government decree (GO) on waiving agricultural loans obtained against gold jewelry up to five rulers will be issued soon, Cooperatives Minister I Periyasamy said.
On Wednesday, a meeting of the cooperative societies of the southern districts was held at the collector of the district of Madurai. Trade Tax and Registration Minister P Moorty and Revenue and Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran attended the meeting chaired by I Periyasamy. Madurai District Collector Dr S Aneesh Sekhar was also present.
Periyasamy said there were allegations that loans taken out by people other than farmers were canceled by the previous AIADMK government. This would be reconsidered, he said. The disbursement of crop loans and the distribution of fertilizer to farmers through cooperative societies were discussed at the meeting. Speaking to reporters, the minister said more than Rs 11,500 crore has been set as a target for providing loans to farmers in the state through major cooperative societies.
He said the second installment of the Rs 2,000 Covid dole and a 14-item grocery kit will be distributed to PDS stores across the state from June 15. Up to 2.10 crore families would benefit. The government led by Deputy Stalin was committed to ensuring the welfare of farmers and people from the poorest strata of society. All promises made by the DMK in the elections would be kept, he said.
Meanwhile, Trade Tax and Registration Minister P Moorthy, who inspected a few registrars in Madurai on Wednesday, said a grievance cell on resolving document registration issues would soon be established in the state.
